Weather Update: Hard Freeze Tonight


You only have a couple more hours of daylight to protect any sensitive plants. Why? A hard freeze is expected tonight as temperatures fall into the 20s.

Additionally, if you're a night owl, make sure to stay up for the "Blood Moon" after midnight. This total eclipse should be visible through filtered cloud cover early Tuesday morning.

Rich Hill Man arraigned In Vernon County Court Today

A rural Rich Hill man was arraigned this morning in Vernon County associate circuit court on felony charges alleging the possession of a controlled substance and the unlawful possession of a firearm. Vernon County sheriff Jason Mosher says officers and C-Net Drug Task Force agents investigated suspected illegal drug operations Thursday in three Vernon County communities arrested 26-year-old Brendan S. Moreland, Rich Hill route 1, Thursday during a surveillance operation in the North part of Nevada. Moreland told judge Neal Quitno he would apply for public defender services and a pre-hearing conference is scheduled April 24.

Butler Police Department Press Release: Butler Man Charged Stealing

jeff bradleyOn April 13th Butler Officers were busy taking reports of vehicle break-ins from the overnight.  Officers performed area canvasses and attempted to locate the possible suspect[s].


On the same date, the Butler Police Department assisted by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol took a 28 year old male suspect, Jeffrey M. Bradley, into custody at 304 West Clark Street in Butler for the possession of stolen property. The Butler Police Department asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the recovered property that was located in the suspect’s vehicle.

The public’s response was great and we were able to return approximately $5,000 worth of stolen property to the rightful owners. If you have had or know anyone who has had property taken from them, please contact the Butler Police Department at 660-679-6131.

On April 14th Jeffrey M. Bradley was served with an arrest warrant for receiving stolen property theft / stealing and possession of a controlled substance.  Bradley was currently out of custody on a signature bond from previous charges when these incidents occurred.  Bradley is currently being held at the Bates County Jail on a $35,000 cash or surety bond.

Butler Police Department Press Release: Standoff in Butler

On 04/12/2014 at 0508 hours Butler officers responded to an address in the 300 block of west Mill for a noise complaint.  Upon arrival Officers made contact an intoxicated male.  

Officers attempted to take the male into custody for disorderly conduct when the suspect fought with the officers.  Pepper spray was deployed and the suspects’ dog attacked the officers while the suspect fled inside his residence.  

The suspect then refused to open the door.  All available officers were called out along with several Bates County Deputies.  At 0543 hours the suspect surrendered to the Officers.  The suspect was charged and placed on a 12 hour detoxification at the Bates County Jail.

Henry County Sheriffs Office: Fishermen take cover

Fishermen in the area of Cooper Creek on Truman Lake in Henry County wisely took cover when when rounds were detected in the area on Saturday night, April 12.

Major Rob Hills of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that folks were riding ATV’s in the Cooper Creek area. They apparently set up some targets and claimed they were having target practice. Unfortunately, the rounds were traveling across the area downrange and threatening fishermen... who contacted law enforcement.

Henry County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Thurman responded to the area. Timophey Razumovsky, 24, Raymore, and Jacob Romnero, 20, Louisiana, were taken into custody for investigation of alleged third degree assault.

Major Hills indicated the two men now apparently realize they shouldn’t have been purportedly target practicing without determining what was down range first. Investigation is continuing

Easter Egg Hunt at Medicalodges Butler

egg nuntMedicalodges Butler will be hosting their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 19th.  

The hunt will begin at 1pm and children will be divided into separate age groups that will hunt for eggs at different times.

Prizes will be given to all participants.  Refreshments including free cotton candy will be served after the hunt.

The Easter Bunny will be on location for pictures and everyone is invited to attend.  Medicalodges Butler is located at 103 E. Nursery in Butler.

Two juveniles arrested in reference to stealing in Appleton City


On Sunday, April 13, two male juveniles were arrested in connection with various items being stolen from vehicles in Appleton City Feb. 28-March 2. A Tom Tom GPS and a USB type phone charger cord was reported stolen from Brandon Snodgrass’ vehicle. 

A wallet and prescription medication was reported stolen from Angela Johnson’s vehicle. A Rand McNally 505 series GPS unit and a charger cord for an Iphone was reported stolen from Todd Scaletty’s truck. Deputies believe all or most of the property from these cases was recovered. The juveniles were turned over to the juvenile authorities.

St.Clair County Sheriffs Office: Burglary at Dains Fish Farm under investigation

On Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 7:29 a.m. a St.Clair County Sheriffs Deputy responded to Dains Fish Farm on SW Highway H, Schell City, in reference to a burglary. 

Robert Dains reported ammunition, cash from register, several rolls of change, and a computer and monitor for the surveillance system was stolen from the store. 

He also reported damage to the front and rear doors. Dains estimated the total damage and loss at $5,240. Evidence was located and seized from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

On April 12, Zach Gipson was snagging from the shoreline just west of Osceola, MO, when he pulled in a 70lbs spoonbill. Gipson said, "It was a lot of work getting it, bit was lots of fun, too!"

St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office: Arrest warrant issued for Kyle Ewing

On Friday, April 11, a St. Clair County arrest warrant was issued for Kyle Ewing, 22, El Dorado Springs, for class  C felony of theft/stealing with the value of property or services $500 or more but less than $25,000. 

The charge stems from thefts at two vacant homes owned by Susan and Robert Lawson in the Taberville area between March 20 and March 21. Items missing from the vacant homes included electric wire, copper tubing, two game cameras, and an electric fence charger.

On Friday, March 28, Ewing was arrested on three unrelated “no bond” warrants from Cedar County. His arrest came after a tip was received from a Facebook post in reference to information being sought on a vehicle possibly involved in the thefts. A photo of the suspect vehicle was posted on the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office website and Facebook page on March 27. On March 28, information was received the vehicle was located at a residence in El Dorado Springs. Contact was made with the El Dorado Police Department and it was confirmed the vehicle was located there. A search was conducted and several stolen items were seized. Ewing remains in the custody of the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office.

Explosion at Berry Bend on Truman Lake

One person was injured in a fire/explosion incident on April 13 in Benton County at the Berry Bend Boat Ramp on Truman Lake.

James E. Kelly, 33, Winfield, attempted to start his watercraft and the explosion occurred.

James E. Kelly experienced moderate injuries and was transported by Warsaw-Lincoln Ambulance to Bothwell Hospital. His 1997 Skeeter watercraft had moderate damage and was removed from the scene by the owner. He had operators insurance through Farm Bureau.

The Light snow continues to lift northeast across the area, but with little to no accumulation expected, the main focus will be very cold temperatures tomorrow morning across the region. A Freeze Warning is in effect area-wide for temperatures dropping into the mid 20s early Tuesday morning. Damage is possible with any sensitive vegetation that may have bloomed out, so take any precautions you can to protect it!

Adrian Blackhawk Invitational Meet Results‏


The Butler Bears Track team traveled to Adrian for the second time of the season. As the weather starts to get nice, the times start to get better. With the absence of a couple athletes due to injury and illness, our team did a great job competing and placed 3rd overall with a team total of 98 points.
Here are the 8 top finishers who earned their team points in their events:
 Our kids are doing a great job working hard and competing. I am really proud of our team at this point in the season and look forward to the last half of the season. We travel to El Dorado Springs on Tuesday April 15. Thanks!

Butler City Wide Clean Up North of Ft. Scott Street

The City of Butler and Bates County Disposal will be conducting a citywide clean-up for residential properties the week of May 5th – May 9th for houses NORTH of Ft. Scott Street.

Bates County Disposal will pick up old furniture, appliances, paint, batteries and miscellaneous junk.  The City of Butler will pick up your brush and limbs placed at the curb.  You need to have your clean-up items or trash separate from your regular weekly trash but should still be at curbside. 

 Brush needs to be in a pile separate from the rest of your trash and also placed at curbside.  Leaves must be bagged in City of Butler leaf bags in order to be collected.

NOTE: This clean-up service is for residential properties only.  They will NOT pick up tires or construction/building materials such as lumber, plywood or shingles.  There is a one pickup load limit per household.  Households with larger amounts must make special arrangements with Bates County Disposal by calling 679-7604.  Items not picked up must be removed from the curb immediately.

PLEASE have your trash or brush ready at curbside by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5th.  No return trips will be made after a street has been completed. Residents are reminded not to set out trash more than one week in advance or you may be subject to code enforcement action.
