Nevada Police Department: investigated a pair of assaults

Nevada police officers investigated a pair of assaults on W. Hickory Street last Friday. Sgt. Steve Bastow says a 25-year-old woman told police she was grabbed by the neck and thrown to the floor of a home in the 300 block of W. Hickory about 3:40 p.m. Friday. Police arrested a 29-year-old male suspect and have applied for a warrant. The other assault occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday at a home in the 1600 block of W. Hickory. Sgt. Bastow says officers were told a woman had taken her husband's vehicle from his work-place in Kansas and, when the husband arrived at the home to retrieve personal property from the vehicle, he was attacked by a 31-year-old man. The husband fled the home in the 1600 block of W. Hickory to the Nevada Police Department, 120 S. Ash, and was taken to Nevada Regional Medical Center, by ambulance, for treatment. Sgt. Bastow says that investigation continues.

Scam sweeping the nation targets good-hearted grandparents

LEAWOOD, Kan — An alert bank employee helped prevent a grandmother from being duped out of $20,000.

It’s the latest example of a surge in “grandparent scams” that’s sweeping the nation. The con artists are even getting the attention of Congress.

The con works like this: A phone caller identifies themselves by name as the target’s grandchild. They say they’re in trouble and they beg for help. For a grandparent, the first instinct is to do whatever you can to prevent your family member from ending up behind bars.

Five. Million. Hits. And counting.

In the early days of Bates County Live, we celebrated achieving 10,000 web page hits. Then 100,000; then 500,000; and when we hit a million, well, it was fine (Boones Farm) wine and caviar (little smokies) for the whole staff!

As time has gone by the counter has steadily ramped up and just today we topped 5 MILLION WEB PAGE HITS! Yeah!

While 5 million hits may seem pretty exciting, it's really another day for Doug Mager and Curtis Vail II who keep things going on the area's most popular web site Bates County Live, now known as Mid America Live.

So what could we do to make this day special? How about a look back:

Unfortunately, our first post was a car accident that claimed the life of an Archie youth, just before 7 pm on June 28, 2010. Since that day, we've had some 'high hit' stories which include:

Missouri fisherman lands record-breaking 130-pound blue catfish

Blue Mound woman dies in motorcycle accident

Two injured in accident near Drexel this morning

Arrest made in connection to deadly fire near Virginia (along with many other posts relating to the murder of Bailey and Brandee Bickleman on March 9, 2011.

Ugh. We don't like reporting the bad news any more than you really want to read it. But-NOW FOR SOME HAPPIER NEWS- Over the last four years, we've posted literally thousands of stories about huge accomplishments by our local students, 4-Her's, military personnel, grand openings, winners of championships, historical celebrations and much, much, much more!

And we couldn't have done it all without you, our advertisers, readers and supporters. We thank YOU for the continued success of Mid America Live.

And when we hit 10 million? We'll throw a real party. See you then!

Infant Death In Clinton

On the evening of Sunday, August 3, at approximately 9:32 P.M. Clinton Police Officers were dispatched to 722 East Franklin Street in reference to a subject not breathing.  Upon arrival, officers found a four month old infant that was not breathing.  The officers performed CPR until medics from the Golden Valley Emergency Room arrived and took over care of the infant.  The infant was transported to the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital but all attempts to revive the infant were unsuccessful and the infant did not survive.

An investigation of the scene and interviews with witnesses was conducted by Clinton Police.  Apparently the infant and a two year old child were left in the care of their father, 32 year old Richard McNabb Jr. of the residence while the mother of the children was at work.  According to witnesses who arrived at the residence just prior to the infant being found unresponsive, McNabb was lying on the couch asleep with the infant underneath his body.  Police officers on the scene stated that McNabb appeared very confused and appeared to be intoxicated from alcohol and possibly under the influence of another unknown substance.  McNabb was transported to the police department for questioning but refused to answer any questions or provide a statement or samples of his breath or blood.

McNabb was placed under arrest for 24 hour investigation of Child Neglect and 2nd Degree Murder.  Working in conjunction with Henry County Prosecutor Richard Shields, Detectives obtained search warrants for McNabb’s residence and his blood.  McNabb was transported to the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital where samples of his blood were obtained.  A search of his residence revealed an amount of marijuana.  Bond was set on the two charges at a total of $75,000 and McNabb’s bond on a prior felony drug charge was revoked by the court and a new bond amount on that incident was set at $25,000 cash only.  McNabb remains incarcerated in the Henry County Detention Center.
