Obituary - Loris Marie Cook


Loris Marie Cook, 86, of Osawatomie passed away at 6:30 am on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Loris was born April 23, 1931 in Monett, Missouri to John Henry and Goldie Mae (Crossland) Stewart. She attended Purdy schools and graduated from Purdy High School with the Class of 1949. On June 4, 1949 she married Hal L. Cook at Monett, Missouri. They were married 62 years. Loris loved music and was an accomplished pianist having taught piano for over 60 years in both Missouri and Kansas. Loris and Hal made their home in Kansas City, then Lee's Summit for many years, forming a lifelong friendship with the family of Catherine Hudson Moran. They eventually moved to Garnett where Hal retired in 1989 from Otis Elevator Company. Loris was honored to serve as the accompanist for Missouri State Senator Emory Melton's Quartet. 

Loris enjoyed crocheting and playing bingo. She greatly loved spending time with family and friends whether it was visiting with her sisters by phone or keeping up with her high school friends and alumni activities. She was especially proud of her son, Danny for his service in the United States Navy; her grandson, Jeremy for his service in the United States Marine Corps; her granddaughter, Shelby for her service in the United States Coast Guard; her grandson Tim for his service in the ROTC; and her grandson Dustin for his devoted dedication as a firefighter. She deeply loved and cherished all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Loris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hal L. Cook on July 19, 2011; daughter, Linda Wanell Cook Farquhar on January 4, 2016; one granddaughter, Elisa Marie Farquhar; two brothers, Phillip Stewart and Richard "Sonny" Stewart, and three sisters, Eva Nell Hemphill, June Hughey, and Ruth Ann Denney. Survivors include one son, Danny Carl Cook; one daughter, Tammy L. Eastwood; seven grandchildren and their families, Timothy Farquhar and wife Kelley and their son Kai; Dustin Farquhar and wife Alissa and their children, Pierce, Christian, Rowland, and Kennedy; Shelby N. Lickteig and her fiancé Brian Head; Wm. Henry Wyatt Lickteig; Jeremy David Cook, Samantha Leigh Cook and her son Angelo Fiore, and Christopher James Cook; and two sisters, Barbara Ward, and Mary Lou Robberson.

One injured in Henry County crash involving a motorcycle and a road grader

On 5/8/17 around 11:42am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Henry County responded to a one vehicle accident on Missouri Z Highway just east of Route NN Highway in rural Henry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1973 Caterpillar 140 Road Grader driven by 74 year old Gary R. Gregory of Deepwater, Missouri was attempting to turn around in a private drive when he was stuck in the front tire by the 2014 Honda VT 1300 Motorcycle driven by 59 year old Timothy R. Payne from Humansville, Missouri.

Mr. Payne sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was life flighted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

The road grader was driven from the scene of the accident and the motorcycle was towed from the scene by Precision Tow.

Harrisonville Citywide Clean Up Set for May 12 & 13

The Spring 2017 City Wide Clean Up event will be held this Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, at WCA Disposal, located at 22820 S. 291 Highway. Times are 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Residents may bring trash, scrap lumber, discarded metal, unmounted tires, and large and bulky items such as furniture or appliances which do not use Freon, and drop them off, free of charge. City employees will be on hand to check proof of residency and help unload items. Proof of residency within the city limits is required to participate in this drop off.

Items that cannot be accepted include auto batteries, paint, yard waste, pesticides and other hazardous chemicals, mounted tires, or appliances which use Freon, such as air conditioners and refrigerators.










Obituary - Donna Sue Spencer

Donna Sue Spencer
Donna Sue Spencer, 69, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at her home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Donna was born July 31, 1947 in Ft. Scott, KS to Argle LaVerne and Neva Thedias (Watson) McReynolds. She was united in marriage to Vern E. Spencer on February 5, 1965 in Lamar, MO and he survives of the home.

Donna was raised in the Vernon County area and attended school in both Nevada and Walker. She worked as an aide at the State Hospital in Nevada for over 20 years. Donna was 37 year cancer survivor. 

She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Nevada. In her spare time she loved making quilts, and fishing, but what she loved the most was spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband Vern she is survived by her children, Michael Spencer and his wife Marilyn, Nevada, Diana Lee Spencer, Nevada, Robert Spencer and his wife Susan, Sheldon; grandchildren, Meghan, Abby, Jesse, Tori, Carrie, Owen, Ashley, Caleb, Brooke, and Bailee; great-grandchildren, AnnaMarie, Jovani, Brantley, Greyson, and Haven; one sister, Peggy Swafford, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one daughter, Tammy Sue; grandchildren, Gracie, Colton, Amie, Taylor; and two great-grandchildren, Matias, Elaina.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Bro. Jerry Pyle officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service.
Memorials are suggested to Vernon County Cancer Relief in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Clinton man arrested in assault case

An arrest warrant has been issued for John Robert Scott, age 25, of Clinton, Missouri, for the class B felony of First Degree Assault, in connection with an incident that occurred on SE BB Highway, south of Brownington, on Friday morning, May 5th, 2017. 

In a complaint filed with the Henry County Associate Circuit Court early Monday morning by the Henry County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, John Robert Scott allegedly pointed a shotgun outside of a motor vehicle and shot at the victim. In the Probable Cause Statement submitted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, it detailed that the victim was struck by one of the gunshots, receiving non-life-threatening injuries. Bond was set on the warrant at $ 50,000 dollars. 

John Robert Scott is currently incarcerated at the Henry County Detention Center. “There are several other incidents still under investigation at this time, which we believe are connected. Upon completion of these investigations, they will be submitted to the Henry County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, for review of possible additional charges being filed.
