Updated Obituary - John William Myler

John William Myler
John William Myler, 89, Harrisonville, MO, departed this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 9, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with visitation from 10:00-11:00. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Archie, Missouri.

John was born April 25, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Elmer E. and Mildred (Forbes) Myler. He attended school in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Southeast High School. Following high school, John served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. After his service, he was united in marriage on April 16, 1954, to the love of his life, Clara Grace “Gracie” Davis. Together they moved to the Everett Community in 1957. To this union two children were born, Mark Daniel Myler and Rhonda Sue Myler. Danny and Rhonda enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with their dad, throughout their childhood.

John carved and checked gun stocks and was a roofer before becoming a full time custom home builder in the mid-1960s. In his lifetime he built hundreds of beautiful homes, many senior housing units throughout the area, helped with the construction of the Archie High School addition, as well as the First Baptist Church addition. He was a superb carpenter and designer and you can see his work throughout Archie and the surrounding area. John also was part owner of the D-Li-My Corporation, which included the D-Li-My Restaurant and development of other commercial properties within Archie. John made many contributions to his community in donated hours of service. He was a past member and president of the Archie School Board and past member and president of the Archie Lions Club. He was also very active in the Archie First Baptist Church.

John and Gracie shared a love of traveling, camping, and fishing. They spent many years traveling the country with their dear friends, Roy and Emma Osborn. They also took their grandchildren on once-in-a-lifetime trips. They took their grandson, Kris, to Alaska where John showed Kris where he was stationed. They took their granddaughter to Florida to visit Walt Disney World.

During the winter John and Gracie were winter Texans for 26 years and the friends they met were considered family. In recent years, they also enjoyed visiting with a group of friends on Friday and Saturday mornings at McDonald's.

John had a very generous and loving heart and was a caring father and grandfather to both his immediate family and several nieces and nephews. He served as a fatherly figure to them throughout their lives and was asked to walk several nieces down the aisle. He was the most gentle, caring, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will always live in our hearts, along with the lessons he taught us about living life, loving family, unconditional love, respect, and helping others. His beautiful soul and smile will be missed by us all.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Elmer, and a sister Marvel Livingston. He is survived by his wife, Gracie, of 63 years, his son, Danny Myler (Lanita), and daughter, Rhonda Rush (Ralph), all of Harrisonville, MO. He is also survived by his grandchildren, who were the sparkle of his eyes, Kristopher Neil Rush (Jill), Tina Janelle Behl (Jamie), and 3 beautiful great-grandchildren, Tanner Rush, Blakely Behl and Sydney Rush. He is also survived by a sister, Betty Jean Minshall, and many nieces and nephews.
