Nevada man arrested in Cass County

On 3/28/18 around 10:16am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County arrested 51 year old David A.Thorns of Nevada, Missouri.

Mr. Thorns was arrested for 1.) Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance 2.) Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana 3.) Unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Cass County Jail in Harrisonville and is currently placed as bondable.

National Doctor’s Day March 30th

Friday, March 30th is the celebration of National Doctor’s Day in the United States. National Doctor’s Day was designated by the Congress and the proclamation was signed and designated on March 30, 1991 by President George Bush.

The proclamation further stated that Americans are encouraged to observe the day with appropriate programs and activities.

Wednesday, March 30th is a time to set aside to honor the doctors in the Bates County area for their commitment to quality healthcare and to recognize society owes a debt of gratitude for their contributions as physicians. We also recognize the sympathy and compassion shown by physicians in ministering to the sick and alleviating human suffering.

We honor the following Bates County Memorial Hospital physicians providing healthcare to the Bates County community and surrounding area for National Doctor’s Day:

• Dr. James Miller at the Nursery Street Family Care Clinic

Obituary - Melvin L. Peterman

Melvin L. Peterman, 97, of California, MO passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the Moniteau Care Center in California, MO surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 22, 1920 in Rich Hill, MO the son of Joe Peterman Jr. and Clara (Hall) Peterman both of whom preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Rich Hill High School in 1938.

Melvin was united in marriage on December 23, 1950 at the First Christian Church in California, Mo to Edwina (Baldwin) Peterman whom survives of the home. He graduated from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO in 1942 with a B. S. in Education Degree with a major in music and a minor in business. Melvin was a member of Kappa Delta PI (An honor fraternity).

Melvin also recieved a Master of Music Degree from Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL in 1952 and an Administrator’s Certificate from the University of Missouri, in Columbia, MO in 1962. Melvin served in the Army Air Force from October of 1942 to February of 1946 and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a public school teacher at Pleasant Gap Rural Elementary School in Bates Co. MO from 1940 – 1941, he taught Business and Music at Rockville High School in Rockville, MO from 1941 – 1942, he taught music at Rich Hill High School in Rich Hill, MO for three months in 1946, he taught Instrumental and Vocal Music from 1946 – 1973 and Vocal Music from 1973 – 1983 at California High School in California, MO. Melvin directed the high School band for community events including community parades, Moniteau County Fair openings in the arena, summer band concerts.

He also directed ten community Christmas cantatas and Easter productions from 1946 -1973. He was the Choir Director for many area churches. Melvin became a member of California First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1951 and served as the Choir Director for many years and an Elder from 1953 – 2000 and was very involved in all aspects of the church. He received the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Chamber of Commerce in 1970 and 2002.

Survivors include one son, Ken Peterman and his wife Tammy of Prairie Village, KS, two daughters, Barbara Gahagan and her husband John of Jefferson City, MO, Kathy Meller and her husband Mark of Lohman, MO, four grandchildren, Emily Allison and her husband Ben of Mission, KS, Claire Sutherlin and her husband J.C. of Prairie Village, KS, Cyrus Meller of Columbia, MO, Jacob Meller of Columbia, MO, and one great grandchild Margaret Grace Allison. He is preceded in death by one infant child Linda Lee Peterman, two brothers, Raymond Peterman and Paul Peterman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 30, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. – 12 NOON with a funeral service following at 12 NOON both at the First Christian Church. Officiating will be Alan Bailey. Burial will be at the Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the California High School Music Department c/o the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, MO.

Obituary - Loren Bradford Key

Loren Bradford Key passed away at home in Nevada, Missouri on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at the age of 38. Loren was born on July 15, 1979 in West Covina, California and grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, California prior to moving to Nevada, Missouri.

Loren is survived by his girlfriend, Jessica Olson, his mother and stepfather, Denise & Lance Neal, his father and stepmother, Bradford and Kathy Key, his two sisters, Darci Nichols and Shanna Krajcir, and their families, and his stepbrother, Matthew Neal.

Loren loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved to camp, fish, surf, snowboard, paintball, wake board, spend time at the lake, and play online video games in his spare time. His smile would light up a room and his quick wit would get everybody laughing. Loren was always there to help a friend and was a hard worker who gave his all to everything he did.

There will be a Celebration of Life Service at a later date

Butler City Wide Clean Up Spring 2018

The City of Butler, in cooperation with Bates County Disposal, will be conducting city-wide cleanup for residential properties.

The week of April 23rd – North of Ft. Scott Street in Butler
The week of April 30th – South of Ft. Scott Street in Butler

Bates County Disposal will pick up old furniture, appliances, paint, batteries, and miscellaneous junk. The City of Butler will pick up your brush and limbs placed at the curb.

You need to have your clean-up items or trash separate from your regular weekly trash, but it should still be at your curbside. Brush needs to be in a pile separate from the rest of your trash and also placed at your curbside.

Leaves must be bagged in the City of Butler leaf bags in order for them to be collected. NOTE: This clean-up service is for residential properties only. Bates County Disposal will NOT pick up tires or construction/building materials such as lumber, plywood, or shingles. There is one pick-up load limit per household. Households with larger amounts must make special arrangements with Bates County Disposal by calling 660-679-7604.

Items not picked up must be removed from the curb immediately. Have your trash or brush ready at curbside by 6am on Monday of your clean-up week. They will not make return trips after they have completed a street. This is a free service provided by the City of Butler in the spring and fall of each year. Residents are reminded not to set our trash more than once a week in advance, or you may be subject to code enforcement action.

Teresa Osborn, 61 of Butler, Missouri passed away March 26, 2018 at her home in Butler. Cremation, with private family memorial services to be held at a later date.

Vehicle Fire in Adrian

The Adrian Fire Department is in route to a vehicle fire on the south side of I-49 just North of AA Highway at this time.

A gold vehicle is said to have flames coming from the engine compartment at this time.

The Harrisonville Board of Aldermen will be holding a public hearing at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2018 at Harrisonville City Hall, 300 E. Pearl Street, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.

In an effort to ensure that the system has adequate revenues to pay the costs of operation and maintenance, the board will be considering a change to the billing method from winter period average to paying based on monthly water usage.
