Obituary - Effie Pearl Louise (Cox) McCollum

Effie Pearl Louise (Cox) McCollum, Rockville, Mo., passed away Monday, July 16, at the home of a son in Webb City, Mo. The former employee at Ellett Memorial Hospital, Appleton City, was 93. 

Services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 20, at Hill and Son Funeral Home, Appleton City, with burial to follow in the Rockville Cemetery. 

Visitation is scheduled between seven and eight o'clock Thursday evening, July 19, at Hill and Son Funeral Home. Memorials to the benevolent fund of the Life Church are suggested and can be made in care of Hill and Son Funeral Home, Appleton City.


Obituary - Shelia M. Harper

Shelia M. Harper, age 69, of Nevada, MO, passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO due to complications connected to a lengthy illness. Shelia was born on April 26, 1949 in Nevada to Gregg Marvin and Norma Beatrice (Dodge) Miller. On July 21, 1970 she married Lawrence G. Harper in Nowata, OK, and he preceded her in death on March 3, 2006.

Shelia grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1967. She made Nevada her home all of her life. Shelia worked for the Nevada R-5 School District as a cook for more than 20 years at Bryan School and Nevada High School. She then went on to work at the American Legion in Nevada where she was loved by all of her patrons. Shelia knew how to serve others and neither needed, nor wanted any recognition. Due to health issues she retired in 2009 but continued to be active with the American Legion Auxiliary as long as she was able. Shelia loved her family and was very devoted to her sons and grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons , Lawrence Gregg Harper of Nevada, Matthew Allen Harper and his wife, Sammantha of Nevada, and Douglas Earl Harper and his wife Ashlee of Nevada; one step son, Dirk Scotten (Debbie) of Nevada, eleven grandchildren, Karson Harper, Lauren Harper, Tyler Harper, Carter Harper, Peyton Harper, Caisen Harper, Rylee Harper, Colton Harter, Marlene Scotten, Tommy Scotten, Derek Scotten; two brothers, James E. Miller (Carol) of Nevada, Michael G. Miller, Nevada; three sisters, Cathy A. Gilliland of Nevada, Karan Osmond (Kevin) Nevada, and Katie Scott (Kip) Yuma, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband Lawrence, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother-in-law, Ron Gilliland, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Christ’s Church in Nevada with Pastor Robert Fox officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Ferry Funeral Home.

Those who wish may contribute in her memory to American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.




Four Texans injured in Vernon County rollover accident

On 7/18/18 around 1:44pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on I-49 around 2 miles north of Nevada.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2013 Toyota Tacoma driven by 46 year old Benjamin Rosales of Houston, Texas failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the roadway overturning several times.

Four people sustained moderate injuries in this accident Benjamin Rosales, 19 year old Sairy G.Quintero Diaz of LaPort, Texas, 30 year old Larry Moreno and 47 year old Galo Sanchez both of Houston, Missouri. All four were transported to Nevada Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Garwood's Wrecker Service of Nevada, Missouri.

Garden City man seriously injured in Cass County Crash

On 7/18/18 around 7:45am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County responded to a one vehicle accident on Route E just north of 171st Street in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1997 GMC driven by 20 year old Bill W. Faust of Garden City, Missouri traveled off the left side of the roadway striking a culvert and ditch before overturning.

Mr. Faust sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Stevers Tow of Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

From the Barton County Sheriff's Office

On June 8th, Corporal Butler, Deputy Clemons, and Sheriff Shaw responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on NE 40th Rd west of F hwy. 

While Deputy Clemons and Sheriff Shaw responded to the vehicle, which was reported to be out of gas to make contact with the driver of that vehicle, Corporal Butler went to make contact with the possible owner of the vehicle. When Deputy Butler arrived at the owners residence the owner confirmed that his truck should be at his house and it was, in fact, missing. 

Deputy Clemons and Sheriff Shaw who was out with a subject who was driving or operating the vehicle confirmed with Deputy Butler the truck was the one that was Stolen and the subject Louis Stockdale was arrested for Stealing/Possession of a Motor Vehicle.





Two arrested in Barton County

On June 8th, Deputy Housel made contact with what looked to be an abandoned truck west of 43 Hwy on 126 Hwy. Deputy Housel discovered a male in the driver’s seat slumped over and unconscious. 

After several attempts to wake the subject, Bradley Marshall, he was finally roused. Deputy Housel performed Field Sobriety Tests on Marshall and Marshall was detained and transported to the Barton County Jail where Sgt. Cornell with the Lamar Police Dept performed drug recognition tests on him. At the conclusion of the investigation Marshall was placed under arrest for Driving while Intoxicated.

On June 11th, Deputies Clemons and Nance responded to Gallager Rd in Golden City in reference to a report of someone breaking into the house. When they arrived they found a broken window so they cleared the house. After speaking to the owner and getting suspect information, they identified the suspect as a Stephen Wardin, who was arrested the day prior on a Nevada PD warrant. The deputies then went to the Vernon County Jail to speak with Wardin on the break in. Wardin was released to deputies of the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and was transported back to the Barton County Jail on Burglary Charges.

On June 12th, Deputy Morris responded with Sheriff Shaw to SW 6th Rd for a report of a suspicious person. Two subjects was camping out underneath the overpass. They made contact with two individuals and one subject was identitifed as a Heather Latham, she was arrested on an active warrant out of Nevada Police Department.



Obituary - Christopher Eugene Hagenson

Christopher Eugene Hagenson, 57, Nevada, MO passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO. Christopher was born September 2, 1960 in Topeka, KS to Robert Martin and Alberta Joan (Campbell) Hagenson.

Christopher grew up in various places as his father was in the Air Force. He lived most of his adult life in Wisconsin although he also lived in Nebraska, Colorado, and for the past two years in Nevada. Christopher was known to his family as a kind and gentle giant.

Survivors include in mother Alberta, Nevada; three sisters, Teresa Hagenson, Nevada, Sunday Thomas, Shawnee, OK, Lisa King and her husband Aaron, Louisville, KY; one brother, Robert Hagenson and his wife Michelle, Bellevue, NE; 10 nieces and nephews; four great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Hagenson.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Obituary - Toni Jean Canencia

A Celebration of Life for Toni will be held at Community of Christ Church, Butler, Missouri on September 9, 2018, at 3 pm. Toni’s wishes were to be cremated, brought back to California and laid to rest with our mother Minnie.

Toni Jean Canencia passed away on July 11, 2018, in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born June 12, 1952, in Merced, California. The daughter of Antonio Canencia and Minnie Lou (Bottineau) Dumaguing. Toni managed various apartment complexes in the California Bay Area before moving to Butler, Missouri 10 years ago. She became very, very close friends with Romona Snyder and son Dan Snyder. Toni had since retired, always kept in touch with her family back home, enjoyed Church, enjoyed computers, loved to read and often boasted about her large cat Onyx.

Toni is survived by her five siblings, David Batt, Peggy Gjertsen, Jerry Canencia, Pascual Dumaguing Jr., Kenneth Dumaguing, niece Stacey Saklikar, nephews Anthony Batt, Craig Dumaguing and Brian Dumaguing, all from California.

Our Family would like to send our condolences to all of Toni’s Missouri Friends that touched her heart, She will be sincerely missed by all.

Power outages near Freeman

Crews from Osage Valley Electric Cooperative are working to restore an outage in the Freeman area. This is an area that has recently had outages due to a tree falling through the line, a snake in the substation, and a severe thunderstorm that blew the roof of a shed through the line. We do not have word yet as to the cause but crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
