Shooting Investigation in Nevada

On 8/22/19 the Nevada Police Department responded to a report of a man that was shot in the 600 Block of East Central Avenue in Nevada.

The man was transported to a hospital in Kansas City for treatment.

The Nevada Police Department is investigating this incident and more information will be made available at a later time.

Arson case in Barton County

The Liberal Police Department, Barton County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Fire Marshall have investigated several fires in Liberal Missouri.

Reports have been sent to the Barton County Prosecutor on the fires and criminal charges have been filed against two subjects from the Liberal area. 

Zachary D. Workman, age 18 and Thomas J. Ingram, age 25 of Liberal have been issued criminal summons on four counts of 2nd degree arson, and they are to appear on Sept. 19th at 9:00am at the Barton County Courthouse.

Zachary Workman is currently in custody at the Vernon County Jail on unrelated charges.

The four fires, which are believed to be arsons, have been investigated and criminal charges have been filed on were on the following dates June 25th, July 3rd, July 4th at, and July 10th in the city of Liberal.

The Sheriff would like to thank all of the Liberal Fire Department first responders in there district for all the hard work and countless hours in fighting these fires.

Obituary - David Junior Stroer

David Junior Stroer, 81, Nevada, MO passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at his home in Nevada following a brief illness. David was born August 25, 1937 in Stockton, MO to David Henry and Clara Rebecca (Mizner) Stroer. On June 3, 1959 he was united in marriage to Alma May Horning in Nevada and she survives of the home.

David grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School Class of 1953. Following high school he served in the United States Army as a truck driver while stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA. David worked 33 ½ years at the Nevada State Hospital and also at Mrs. Murphy’s Laundry for 27 years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending winters in Texas during his retirement years. He and Alma have resided in Nevada since 1959. David was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada.

In addition to his wife Alma, he is survived by one daughter, Misty Miller and her husband Richard, Nevada; one son, Kendall Stroer and Kelly Fitzpatrick, Nevada; three grandchildren, Tiffany Stroer, Cody Miller, and Kristal Miller, all of Nevada; one great-grandchild, Alexa Stroer; and one brother, Marion Stroer and his wife Jill, Douglasville, GA; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Horning; and one brother, Gerald Dean Stroer.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Ray Dean Scism officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Nevada Senior Center in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Obituary - Christopher Clayton Starbuck

Christopher Clayton Starbuck, 34, Nevada, MO passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 in Nevada. Chris was born January 23, 1985 in Nevada. He married Ashley Crabtree on May 19, 2013 in Fort Scott, KS.

Chris grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada High School. He received an associate degree from Crowder College in Neosho in small engine and automotive repair. Chris has worked for Ken Cove Farm Fence Company in Nevada for the past 13 years. During his time with Ken Cove, Chris traveled numerous times to China and Taiwan and has worked throughout the United States. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Dallas Cowboys, and going to the races. Most of all he loved spending time with his children, especially times spent fishing and going to the park.

Survivors include his wife, Ashley; four children, Addison Starbuck, Cayson Starbuck, Aaliyah Starbuck, Alexis Starbuck; his parents, Bonnie and Scott Stone, Nevada, and Clayton Starbuck, Nevada; two sisters, Penny Lowry and her husband Darren, Nevada, Stephanie Boyd and her husband Jeremy, Nevada; one brother, Earl Johnson, Nevada; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Jeff Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

Those who wish may contribute to a memorial fund for his children in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Cooler weather through the weekend

Cooler weather will stick around through at least the weekend, with afternoon temperatures hanging out in the 70s and low 80s - not too shabby for late August! A couple showers will be possible each day.

Pleasanton, Kansas man arrested in Bates County

On 8/21/19 around 5:26pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 72 year old John G. Ballou of Pleasanton, Kansas.

Mr. Ballou was arrested for 1.) Felony Driving While Intoxicated - Habitual Offender 2.) Careless and Imprudent Driving.

He was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and placed on a 12 hour detox hold.
