Belton Police Department warns of scam!

In the last few days, we have received reports of a new scam. The suspect contacts the victim by phone claiming to be with a federal agency. The suspect tells the victim that a rental car rented in the victim's name was stopped in Texas loaded down with cocaine and that the victim is on the hook for the crime.

When the victim explains they don't have a rental car full of cocaine, the suspect tells the victim their identity has been stolen and their bank account is at risk.

The suspect then tells the victim to use what money is left in their account to buy various gift cards (to get the money safely out of the bank before it’s too late), take pictures of the gift cards and then send the pictures of the gift cards to the suspect as proof that the victim followed directions.

A federal agency will never contact you and instruct you to purchase anything or ask for your social security number, etc.

If you are concerned that your identity has been stolen by a criminal in another state, contact your local law enforcement agency.
