The Life Story of Morris Vernon Sheek

Born April 30, 1926, the son of Robert Isaac and Jennie Mae (Briggs) Sheek, His Birth place was located north of Shady Grove School in Henry County. Morris joined his sisters, Doris Velda (Dundas) and Reva June (Mallory) where they received eight years of schooling at the Shady Grove School. He learned to play the guitar and share his music at an early age.

The family moved to the Leesville area into the house built in 1891 by his grandfather William “Uncle Billy” Briggs. Morris was given the nickname of ‘Shorty’ as a young child and was saved during a revival meeting at Tebo Baptist Church where the Sheek family were loyal members. He attended Coal High School and in 1944, was drafted into the United States Army where he served as Military Police during World War II.

After Honorable Discharge, Morris joined his father in the Leesville General Store and operated business as the Sheek and Son General Store. In 1947, he took as his bride the lovely Margie Dalton. To this union five children were born who all survive their father. In 1963, Morris was ordained in the Tebo Baptist Church.

In 1969, Morris served as chairman of Tebo Church’s committee serving to move the original church and cemetery to a new location because of the creation of Harry S. Truman Lake.

Morris’ life has been filled with compassion for others and a deep love of music. He led music at Tebo Baptist Church for many years and after retirement, shared his gift with other churches. He worked multiple jobs to provide for his family of which the most recent are: Osage Valley Electric Co., Consolidated Supply, Leesville Crossing Community Store/restaurant, Kenton Place Apartments, and a greeter for Country Mart and Wal-Mart.
