The Little Apple August 4th


The annual Block Party, sponsored by Ellett Memorial Hospital and A.C. Clinic, will be Saturday, August 7, 2021. The day will kick off with the 5K run/walk/bicycle at 7:30 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:00 a.m. in front of the Hospital. EMH’s Auxiliary bake sale will be inside in the Hospital in the Dining Room. Starting at 8a.m., there will be multiple healthcare vendors, set up on the outside lawn, sharing information about healthcare needs in our surrounding area. New this year, they are excited some local vendors will be joining. To name a few – Shannon Barth with Tupperware, Misti’s Salsa, Rural Roots, Tom’s Custom Woodworking, Strope’s Scents, Closing with Claire, Udderly Nuts & The Rusty Bucket, and Nelma’s Creatives. The Lab will have some special-priced lab draws available including BMP/TSH $25, BMP/LIPID Panel/TSH $30, Hemoglobin A1C $15, and PSA $15. Weather permitting, Life Flight Eagle will land at noon. Thorni Ridge Exotics will have a petting zoo and bouncy house. KC Wolf will be making an appearance sometime throughout the event. There will be free hotdogs, chips, water and free sno-cones! The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, August 8 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up. A free will donation will be greatly appreciated

There will be a benefit Cornhole Tournament 6:30 p.m. August 7 2021 at the Montrose Ball Park. All proceeds will be divided between Keon Engeman and Owen Westhusing. The adult division is $40 per team with cash prizes. At least 1 player must be over 18 years old. Junior division (12-18 years old) is $20 per team and little’s division (6 up to 12 years old) are free. Concessions will be available and there will be a 54 card raffle for a Traeger Grill with soft side cooler. All cash and prizes have been donated. It's an Ice Cream Social to celebrate the Missouri Bicentennial Tuesday, August 10, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in Forest Park and it's free. Come be a part of the state-wide celebration (and maybe get your photo taken for the Missouri Bicentennial social media). The event is sponsored by the GFWC Achievers of Appleton City. Does your school, not-for-profit organization, church or governmental entity have a project in mind that could use some funding? Truman Lake Community Foundation, Inc. announces their Fall 2021 Grant Application cycle opens on August 1, 2021. Grant applications must be completed online at https://www.grantinterface.com/Process/Apply?urlkey=cfozarksgrants (be sure to look for the Truman Lake Community Foundation Grantmaking Program Fall 2021) before the 5:00 p.m. August 31, 2021 deadline. Core Four is sponsoring “Friends Helping Friends Miller Family Benefit” chicken dinner Sunday, August 15 from 11:00 a.m. until the chicken is gone at the Farmhouse Kitchen, 302 Railroad St. Appleton City, MO. The event will benefit Tammy Miller and her daughter Tory, who have been off work due to illness and have incurred numerous medical expenses. The meal is $12 per person and includes Kickin’ Chicken fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, green beans, slaw, hot roll and tea or lemonade. You can dine in or take out. Other items of interest include a bake sale by friends and family and additional activities. A Cornhole Tournament will be held in the grassy area across from Farmhouse Restaurant. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 11:00 a.m. Registration is $30 per team of two and is double elimination. There is only one division (all ages can play). The Montrose Class of 2024 is sponsoring a benefit whole hog raffle for Keon Engeman. They are selling raffle tickets for a whole hog plus the cost of processing. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25. The hog is from the Henzlik Family Farm and the cost of processing is paid for by donations from families of the Montrose Class of 2024. If you win, you will be contacted via telephone. The drawing is September 1, 2021 and the pig will be delivered to processor at the beginning of September. All proceeds for this raffle will go directly to Keon Engeman for medical expenses. During the Sesquicentennial Celebration people are asked to tell a memory of Appleton City. It does not need to be long or involved, just a few minutes at the most. The memory will be videotaped and archived for future generations to enjoy. The memory could be something of interest that you know or remember about AC, a fun story or just a favorite memory. A place and time to share your story will be announced in the near future. If people don’t share their memories, those great stories may someday be gone forever.

The Sesquicentennial will be August 12-15. The schedule is available and will be posted in the former Yoss Grocery windows. It will also be published in Mid America Bates County edition and AC Journal the week of August 1. 2021. Positions need to be filled for greeters at all the exhibits to welcome the visitors. The Military Display is asking everyone to look in their closets for former Military uniforms. Bill Gilmore has created stands to display each one on. And some may be used in the Decade Fashion Review. If you have items or storyboards to share contact Bill at 660-492-3139. Souvenir SQC hats are available at Community First Bank, as well as other souvenirs. Some items have already sold out. The Fashion Review will be an event of entertainment. Encourage your family to participate with clothing from other eras, either by loaning them for others to wear or someone you know can be the model. Contact Denice Nitchals 660-492-3180. Every guy who has whiskers should enter the contest. Encourage them by tell them about the contest on Thursday, August 12. Many costumes have been made and worn during the past celebrations. Appleton City Sesquicentennial "Those were the Days" Scavenger Hunt will be Thursday evening August 12. Entry forms may be picked up beginning Thursday August 5, 2021 at the following businesses: Community First Bank, Casey's, Farmhouse Restaurant or St. Clair County State Bank. All entries must be returned to Debbie Barber at Community First Bank by 3:00 p.m. Thursday August 12, 2021. More details are available when you pick up the form. There will be daily Bus Homes Tours during the SQC event. Free tickets will be available for pickup after August 1 at Shelter and All America insurance offices, or call 660-492-2380. Tickets will assure a person a seat on a specific day tour and time. Non-ticket holders will board the bus last.

Please help bring your local Appleton City art creation to the Art Exhibit at the Masonic Hall, Third and Locust Streets during the Sesquicentennial. Some just have the talent and others could honor their instructors by displaying their creations. Mothers and grandmothers, you can be the exhibitor. In conjunction with the Appleton City Sesquicentennial Celebration and also the congregation’s Sesquicentennial (+1), Trinity Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a quilt show at the church and inviting area quilters to participate. The Quilt Show will be Friday and Saturday, August 13-14 during the Sesquicentennial. Included in the show will be hand-quilted, machine-quilted, embroidered, appliquéd, and baby quilts, and wall hangings. If your quilt, either old or newer, has an interesting story with it, also plan on sharing that with the public. The show pre-registration begins now and ends June 30. At this time, 1 item can be registered per entry. After June 30, depending on responses, the registration may be opened up again to include more available spaces at the show. A $25 prize will be awarded in each category and a $50 “People’s Choice” Award. The Appleton City Park Board has open seats and needs new members. They currently only have 5 members out of 9 seats, which means every current member must attend every meeting because the state requires a minimum of 5 members present to officially make decisions - pass budget, approve repairs, etc. With only 5, it's challenging to say the least. If you live within the AC city limits and could generously share just an hour a month, contact one of these park board members to see how: Shellie Unell, Annie Johnson, April Collins, or Cindy Wade. Appleton City is fortunate to have several parks that locals, as well as visitors, enjoy. The parks provide opportunity for fair grounds and play grounds, cars shows and youth sports, a place to cool off in the summer, and gather with friends and family indoors and outdoors. And it takes a community to make it all happen!

West Central Missouri Community Action Agency, with the best interest of the public and the safety of the communities that they serve, has decided to move away from an in-person Festival of Charity this year. While they were so excited to welcome everyone to join them for an evening of fun and charity, they have decided to pivot toward another option. With COVID-19 cases on the rise in southern Missouri and an overall increase for the state, they are moving to a series of online opportunities for the week of August 2, all leading up to the Raffle for a Cause LIVE drawing that will be held on both YouTube live and Facebook Live on August 5 at noon. They hope you can join them virtually and check out the videos they will be releasing all during that week.
