One arrested in Bates County on warrants

On May 2nd around 12:21pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 25 year old Lane M. Simpson of DeSoto, Kansas.

Mr. Simpson was arrested for 1.)Felony Jackson County Kansas Sheriff's Office Warrant- Obstructing a Police Officer 2.) Felony Johnson County Kansas Sheriff's Office Warrant - Assault 3.) Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. 

He was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and is currently being held on no bond.

Obituary - George T. “Corky” Long

George T. “Corky” Long, 92, of Pleasant Hill, was born October 25, 1928, in Strasburg, the son of Ernest Dean and Gertrude Bell (Homan) Long. He departed this life Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Corky was a 1946 Pleasant Hill High School graduate later earning an Associates Degree from Central Missouri State University.

On March 18, 1950, he was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Mills in Pleasant Hill. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1999.

Corky was employed as a Service Manager for several area car dealerships including Haines and Hodges Buick, Chuck Haines Buick, Wilmoth Buick, and Fleetwood Chevrolet. Following retirement, he was a funeral assistant for the Stanley and Son Funeral Home for 17 years. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill First Presbyterian Church and the Pleasant Hill Lions Club. He enjoyed watching auto racing and was an Avid Indianapolis 500 fan attending every race from 1989 to 2005.

Corky was also preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Catherine Roby.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Donna Long of Pleasant Hill; son-in-law, Johnnie Roby of Lee’s Summit; two grandchildren, Josh Long of Pleasant Hill, and Jennifer (and) Jimmy Long of Olathe; two great grandchildren Oliver and Maclin; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home. Reverend D. Kent Deubner will officiate. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Meals on Wheels and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

News from the Crawford County Kansas Sheriff’s Office

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a call this afternoon reporting that the victim of a gunshot was located on south Highland Street in Mulberry Kansas.

Deputies responded and located the victim identified as Tyler Rose, 22 in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

The victim was transported to Ascension Via Christi by EMS and flown from there to Freeman in Joplin.

Mulberry PD and KHP also responded and assisted with the investigation. The suspect in the shooting has not yet been located and the circumstances of the incident are still under investigation.



Fatality motorcycle accident in Benton County

On May 1st around 9:42pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Benton County along with Benton County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle motorcycle accident on Route MM just north of US 65 Highway in rural Benton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2005 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by 61 year old Geary W. Shaddox of Warsaw, Missouri struck a deer then traveled off the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver.

Mr. Shaddox was pronounced dead and transported Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw. This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 25th fatality accident on 2021.
