James Vernon “Jim” Bryant, 86, was born May 4, 1935 in Independence, Missouri, the son of Ruben Nealy and Hazel Mae (Conner) Bryant. He departed this life February 5, 2022 at his home in Kansas City, Missouri surrounded by his loving family.
Jim and Mary Kathryn Allis were united in marriage March 27, 1957 at the Grand Avenue Methodist Temple, and they were blessed with five children. He and Mary currently attended Lighthouse Chapel, Church of God (Holiness).
Through his life Jim did many things, never being without a job. During the kids younger years Mary would take them to a park across from Jim’s workplace and they’d play until their dad workday was done then all go home together. He retired from Metro Park, Inc. where he was a forklift operator for many years.
Jim was a great “Dad” and a greater “Poppy”. He enjoyed keeping the grandchildren for six full weeks in the summertime when they were all out of school. They loved hanging out with their grandparents and especially helping Poppy build things and do repair jobs. The grandkids were rewarded with passes to Worlds of Fun during their summer stays as well.
Jim loved gardening and had two green thumbs. He most enjoyed raising monstrous tomato plants, bell peppers and cucumbers. He also loved roses. The family was able to eat fresh vegetables all summer and what was left before frost was put in the freezer.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents; his daughter Kathy Sue Rice; his siblings: John, David, Ruben Jr. and Thomas Bryant, George Lumley, Arless Evens and Martha Peterson. Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Mary K. Bryant; his children: Verna Basham (Dennis), Jimmy Bryant, Brenda Jean Lawson and Mary Ellen Stivers; Eleven grandchildren: Clarissa Secrest (Patrick) Jennifer Ann Riddle (John), Jennifer Leanne Hershberger (Eric), Alicia Quick (Keith), Sharon Mundy (Kyle), Kevin Basham (MaKenzie), Waneta Bryant, Katie Rice, Richard James Lawson, Elizabeth Anne Stivers and Randell Harris (Rebekkah); and 18 great-grandchildren. Jim was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
