1888 The full extent of last night’s blast and fire at Keith & Perry’s coal mine #6, near Rich Hill is being assessed. 20 are dead, 15 missing and several unaccounted for. Most died of suffocation in the mine 6 miles from Rich Hill.

1960 3,503,600 bushels of corn were harvested last fall, in Bates county compared to 1,731,170 bushels picked in 1940.

1972 The Bates Co Democrat runs a paid political advertisement for Leslie White, candidate for fourth ward councilman, however, the picture in the ad is Eddie Herrman, candidate for city tax collector, Butler.

1999 The Bates County Memorial Hospital honors its active staff of physicians: Dr Curtis Long, 35 years; Dr William Hayne, 35 years; Dr Robert Strobach, 35 years; Dr Jeffery VanBiber, 12 years; and Dr Jim Miller, 1 year.
