The Clinton School District recently named Shelly Johnson the Clinton Middle School Head Volleyball Coach.
Coach Johnson’s passion for volleyball started at a young age. In middle school, she began playing for her school’s team, this continued in high school, and to this day, Shelly continues to play the sport.
Four years ago, when Shelly saw the need for a youth volleyball recreational club in our community, she began Clinton Attack. This club has targeted 4th-6th graders with the hopes of introducing them to the sport of volleyball prior to middle school.
During the last four years, Clinton Attack has seen many successes, including an undefeated regular season from last year’s 5th grade team and two tournament championships. Shelly has also coached a club volleyball team the past two seasons and has been excited to see growth and improvement from them. This team had one second place finish and several third place finishes this past season.
Shelly, her husband, Kyle, and two daughters, Annie (8th grade) and Brooklyn (6th grade), moved to Clinton nine years ago. For the past fourteen years, Shelly has been a Client Services Manager at Financial Designs in Overland Park and has worked remotely since moving to Clinton. Kyle is an Optometrist at Eyecare Specialties.
As a family, the Johnsons enjoy many outdoor activities, including hiking, boating and camping. Many weekends are spent on the lake with family and friends, or cheering and coaching their daughters in their activities. “Both Kyle and I grew up in small communities, and always knew we wanted to raise a family in one as well, so moving to Clinton felt like home. It’s been a great fit for us,” says Shelly.
“As I have said before, I am beyond excited about all of the hires I have been able to make in my first full calendar year as Activities Director for the Clinton School District. The hire of Shelly Johnson is no different,” says Alex Johnson. “Shelly is someone who has already given countless hours of her time to the Clinton community by coaching our youth volleyball players. Her expertise in the game of volleyball will bring invaluable experience to the development of our younger players and her character/leadership is something that I know will translate both on and off the court. Welcome to the team, Shelly. We are THRILLED to have you!”
Coach Johnson is excited to continue growing a love for volleyball in Clinton students, “I have a passion for coaching kids in volleyball. I have had so much enjoyment over the years watching kids improve their skills, find their competitive drive, celebrate successes and develop team unity. I am excited to continue the work this year with the middle school program, and aim to give kids a positive experience!”
