Obituary - Terry Lee Thornton

Terry Lee Thornton, age 65, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 13, 2022 in the comfort of his home.

Terry was born July 13, 1957 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of Thomas Frank Thornton Sr and Edith Mae Landy-Boone Thornton. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1975 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring as an E-6 Tech Sergeant. He served duty assignments across the world including: Alaska, Arizona, Alabama, California, England, Oman and his final assignment at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. Following his military retirement, he later built a career working for the State of California as a Computer Programmer for the Department of Health Services, where he retired in 2016.

Terry was a deeply devoted family man who cherished spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a loyal and enthusiastic Washington Redskins fan, those who know him understand the affinity he had for the team. He also enjoyed fishing, puzzles, board games, listening to music, dancing, playing dominoes, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and beloved cats, Oliver, Kitty, Lola and Kayla. He was passionate about coaching and mentoring children and young adults. He was a pillar of his community in Yuba City, CA and Raymore, MO where he was heavily involved in the Parks and Recreation department in volunteer and supervisory roles. He coached hundreds of young children over the years including his own daughters. He made an impact each day by helping students and young adults to understand responsibility and empowered them to make their own decisions. He was fiercely loving, incredibly stylish, competitive and had a huge, caring heart. To know Terry, was to know the joyous and loving man that he was, there was never a stranger he couldn’t convert to a friend. He had an infectious laugh and sought to maintain connections with those he loved near and far.

On September 26, 2011, he married his loving wife, Anna Baumann, in Yuba City, California, together they blended their families and shared love for their six children and 10 grandchildren. Shortly following his retirement from the State of California, he and Anna moved to Raymore, MO to enjoy their retirement together. They shared a deep love for one another and enjoyed volunteering together at the Heart and Hand thrift store in Raymore, MO.

Terry is survived by his wife, Anna Thornton; his children Terry Gambrell of Greenville, South Carolina, Nicole R Roberson of Washington DC, Angelica Vega-Foley (Brendon) of Phoenix, Arizona and Alaina Miller (Nick) of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin; his step-daughters Amanda Middlemas (RJ) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Shannon Jorgensen (Tyler) of Castlerock, Colorado; his siblings, Pastor Wilbert Nicholson (Brenda), of Greenville, NC, Pastor Thomasine Wortham (Hubert) of Flushing, Michigan, Toni Wright (Linwood) of Norfolk, Virginia, and Jenelda Scott (Marcus) of Portsmouth, Virginia; his cousin Willia Allen (Floyd) of King George, Virginia, 10 grandchildren, and his many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and the friends who became his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas Frank Thornton (Yvonne, deceased) and his parents, Thomas Frank Thornton and Edith Mae Landy-Boone.

A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM, with a service to follow at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Fellowship Church in Raymore, MO.

A reception will be held at Fellowship Church immediately following the services.

Terry will be laid down in his final resting place at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, with military honors on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Raymore Parks & Recreation Department or Yuba City Parks & Recreation Department.
