C. W. Southers, 81, of Clinton, Missouri departed this life in the early morning hours of Monday, September 26, 2022, at his home. He was born February 24, 1941, in Huntingdale, Mo., near Clinton, the son of William and Hannah Frances (Riley) Southers.He graduated from Central Missouri State College, now the University of Central Missouri, with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree.
He earned his Master of Science in Education degree from Central Missouri State College, (UCM). He furthered his education with his Principal Certification for middle and high school. C. W. taught Elementary Physical Education was assistant basketball coach and assistant football coach for the Warrensburg, Mo., School District in the mid 1960’s. His next position was varsity basketball coach and Driver’s Education and Physical Education teacher with the Polo, Mo., High School. In 1970 he and wife Carolyn moved to Clinton, Mo., and both taught school for the Sherwood High School at Creighton, Mo. During his tenure there, he taught Driver’s Education, Physical Education, and coached varsity basketball. In 1973 he was employed as Junior High Principal with the Sherwood School District. Following his career in education, he spent many years driving over the road for several truck lines. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Sutton. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 1, 2022. Additional survivors are, one son, Ethan Southers (Amy), Warrensburg, Mo.; grandchildren, Jacob, Sawyer (Autumn), and Braden, all of Warrensburg, Mo., and Leah (Southers) Standon (Nick), Dover, Delaware; four great-grandchildren, Leam, Keiler and Adeline Standon and Grace Southers; one brother, Lawrence Southers; his niece Laura Southers and her mother, Chris Ward, all of Portland, Oregon; one sister-in-law, Pat Southers and family, Salem, OR. Others left to celebrate memories of his life are cousins, former students, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Frances; one daughter, Lydia in 1998; two brothers, Robert Southers and his wife Grace, and Jim Southers; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alma and Ennis Sutton of Warrensburg, Mo. C. W. was a faithful member of his church family with the First Christian Church of Clinton. C. W.’s wishes were to be cremated. Graveside services are planned for June 3, 2023.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Christian Church or WILS, Assisted Technology for the visually handicapped. These donations may be left in care of the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home.
