We are thrilled to announce this week’s State Farm Student Athlete of the week senior, Mariah Cooper from Archie. Mariah plays on the Lady whirlwinds varsity volleyball team. She was nominated by her Head Coach Miranda Bridges.
Coach Bridges nominated Mariah because “she is an amazing example of a leader both on and off the court. She strives for perfection in all that she does. As a senior, she has maintained over a 4.0 GPA while balancing athletics, a job as a gymnastics coach, and taking dual credit courses.
The first five games this season she was serving 100% with 83 serves and she has 282 assists.” Currently the Lady Whirlwinds are 6-2. When we asked Mariah how being and athlete can make you a better person she stated “It motivates me to help others on the court and motivate my teammates.
Especially being there for them not only for the ups but for the downs too.” We asked her what she feels makes a team leader and she stated “I feel a leader constantly motivates their team and keeps others up, not letting them get upset with themselves when mistakes happen.” When we asked her what she feels it takes to be successful in her sport she stated “I think you have to have a good mindset and a good attitude and really have that drive and motivation to succeed.” We asked her what she feels sets apart an elite athlete and she stated “for me it’s that athlete that always has a smile on their face.
That celebrates everyone and shows that through their body language on and off the court.” Mariah plans on attending the University of Central Missouri after graduation. It was such a pleasure talking to Mariah. We wish her and the Lady Whirlwinds the best of luck this season.
