We are very excited to announce this week’s State Farm student athlete of the week Kennedy Diggs. Kennedy is a Junior at Sherwood High School and is starting pitcher for the varsity lady Marksmen softball team. Kennedy was nominated by her coach Lonny Price. Their team is currently 7-0 this season and Kennedy has pitched all games with 100 strikeouts. She also leads the team with a batting average over .500.
She maintains all A’s in the classroom while working hard on the field. Coach Price states “Kennedy is a great upperclassmen leader for our group that encourages all the other players. She understands the benefit of teamwork to help us become successful and is teaching the younger players this as well.” When we asked Kennedy how she stays motivated to play her sport, she stated “she really wants to get college paid for by receiving scholarships to play softball at the next level.” We asked her what would be one weakness she has and what she is doing to improve it.
Kennedy stated “I am working hard to improve and adjust my timing with my hitting on slower pitchers.” We asked her what her biggest goal is that she wants to accomplish before the season is over, “she stated she wants to beat the state record for number of strike outs in a season. She is currently holding the second place spot and needs over 404 strike outs to beat the record.” Lastly, we asked her what she feels like it takes to be an elite and stand out athlete.
Kennedy stated “you have to know you aren’t going to be perfect all of the time. Also, always doing what is best for your teammates. Make them feel wanted and be a good leader. Everyone has a part on the team even if they aren’t a starter.” It was such a pleasure speaking with Kennedy and we wish her and the Lady Marksmen the best of luck this season.
