Gary was born on April 10, 1944, in Miami County Kansas (formerly known as West Drexel), to Newton T. Russell and Bernice McMeins. He was the oldest of three brothers and worked with his dad on the family farm. In his late teens he worked for a Polo Horse farm, where he traveled across the country tending to the horses prior to the polo matches. After high school he took a job with Rock Island Railroad in Kansas City.

On May 16th, 1964, he was united in marriage to Delia Mae Glaze at the Merwin Christian Church.

Gary served in the US Army from 1968-1970 and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. It was here that he received the highest score out of 227 men for expert marksmanship. He finished his tour in Neu Ulm, Germany, as a Sergeant 5 with the 79th Engineer Battalion and received a letter of appreciation from his commander for his participation during Operation Black Lion. Gary was proud of his service to our country and if you were lucky you would get to hear some of his stories from his service.

In 1976 he and Delia welcomed their daughter Susan into this world. In 1978 they had surprise twins, Sara and David.

He had a great love for motorcycles, but nothing compared to the love he had for his children and grandchildren. He made sure to include them in every part of his life. He took each of his kids on a cross country motorcycle trip with a whole gang of his friends.

After the service he returned to Drexel where he and his wife made their home. He began farming in the area and was proud to buy his farm in Kansas in 1986. Gary loved working the land, tending to livestock, and taking care of his farm. He also drove a semi-truck over the road for many years; most recently for the Phillips Hog Farm in Drexel. Gary worked hard but he also played hard. Gary’s passion for motorcycles led him to racing from the mid 70's until the age of 72. He was a great competitor of the sport of racing hare scrambles.

He made many lifelong friends that shared the same passion for motorcycles and passed that passion on to his family. Gary loved riding his street bike along with many friends. He enjoyed taking long touring trips around the country with his street bike buddies, wife and family members.

Gary loved when his grandchildren and grand dog, Zoey would visit. He loved sharing his love for music, tractors, plowing and many other topics on YouTube with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed Saturday afternoon visits at Melvin's and Saturday night watching Supercross with his grandchildren.

Gary was a quiet man who enjoyed his home, family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Newton T. Russell and Bernice McMeins Angle and brother Ricky L. Russell. He is survived by his wife Delia Russell, children Susan Harper and husband Scott, David Russell and wife Carin, and Sara Borden and husband Eric; grandchildren Russell, Kayla, Ava and Eli; his brother Ronald M. Russell and wife Carol as well as nieces and nephew.
