Adrian man faces charges in fire department thefts

According to documents obtained from the Bates County Circuit Court, Jesse Eugene Burhart 40, is facing one count of Stealing, $750 or more, a Felony D related to misuse of credit cards that are used to purchase fuel by the Adrian Rural Fire Department.

According to information and an initial statement taken by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Burhart was observed by video surveillance and through receipts fraudulently using the cards on five occasions during the past two years to purchase fuel for a personal vehicle.

During the same interview, Burhart admitted to using three different fire department cards and using pin numbers designated for other fire department personnel.

The investigation revealed that the cards were used between 5:40 and 6:15 am which is when Burhart normally would be departing for work, not normally a regular time for fueling fire equipment. As an investigation continues, the documented amount deemed fraudulently taken so far is $4,059.04.

During Burhart’s initial court appearance earlier this month in the Bates County Circuit Court a plea of not guilty was entered by counsel Kevin Anderson.

A pre-trial conference for the case has been scheduled for 9 am, January 25, 2023.
